Plant life

For centuries people have worked Ängsö’s soils, and this has put its stamp on the island. A cultural landscape with meadows and grazing land and sparse deciduous groves has emerged by gradual stages.

Today the landscape consists of meadows, dry grasslands, grazing land, sparse deciduous groves and forest. Growing in the dry meadows are late-flowering yellow rattle, spring pea, cowslip and a number of orchids, the large populations of elder-flowered orchids being the most well-known. In the more moist sections of the meadows, bird’s eye primrose, dwarf milkwort, snake's head fritillary and parnassia flourish. Mats of ramsons spread out in the groves along with sweet woodruff and Solomon’s seal.
